Patty Stiles

Patty works primarily in acrylic and occasionally in watercolor. Although she continues the love of light and contrast shown in her earlier watercolors, she prefers to use acrylic in a style more like oil painting.

Her favorite subjects are windows and doors, with high contrast between light and shadow. Objects partially hidden in shadow are mysterious and contrast wonderfully with brightly-lit, hard-edged objects in sunlight. The texture of the rustic or the smoothness of soft forms slipping into shadow also draws her to a subject.

Most of her work is realistic. She feels realism offers opportunity to express the complexity of the visual world in many ways. It also offers the greatest opportunity to communicate clearly with viewers because of the shared connection to the external world. Although she likes non-objective or abstract paintings, they remain the minority of her work.
